Time variation of fundamental constants, primordial nucleosynthesis, and the size of extra dimensions.

چکیده
In theories with extra dimensions, the dependence of fundamental constants on the volume of the compact space allows one to use primordial nucleosynthesis to probe the structure of compact dimensions during the first few minutes after the big bang. Requiring the yield of primordial He to be within acceptable limits, we find that in ten-dimensional superstring models the size of the extra dimensions during primordial nucleosynthesis must have been within 0.5 jo of their current value, while in Kaluza-Klein models the extra dimensions must have been within 1% of their current

Effects of Possible Deviations of Fundamental Physical Constants on Primordial Nucleosynthesis
We study the effects of possible deviations of fundamental physical constants on the yields of light nuclides, 2 D, 3 He, 4 He, 7 Li , and others during primordial nucleosynthesis. The deviations of fundamental constants from their current values are considered in the low-energy approximation of string theories; the latter predict the existence of a scalar field, which, apart from the tensor gr...
متن کاملObservational limits on the time evolution of extra spatial dimensions.
Limits are imposed upon the possible rate of change of extra spatial dimensions in Kaluza-Klein and superstring theories by considering the consequences of such changes for primordial nucleosynthesis and the positioning of nuclear resonance levels in samarium, carbon, and oxygen. Previous limits from nucleosynthesis had not included strong-interaction effects. The strongest limits constrain the...
متن کاملHelium and Deuterium Abundances as a Test for the Time Variation of the Fine Structure Constant and the Higgs Vacuum Expectation Value
We use the semi-analytic method of Esmailzadeh et al. (1991) to calculate the abundances of Helium and Deuterium produced in the primordial nucleosynthesis assuming the fine structure constant and the Higgs vacuum expectation value may vary in time. We analyze the dependence on the fundamental constants of the nucleon mass, nuclear binding energies and cross sections involved in the calculation...
متن کاملBlack Holes and Sub-millimeter Dimensions
Recently, a new framework for solving the hierarchy problem was proposed which does not rely on low energy supersymmetry or technicolor. The fundamental Planck mass is at a TeV and the observed weakness of gravity at long distances is due the existence of new sub-millimeter spatial dimensions. In this letter, we study how the properties of black holes are altered in these theories. Small black ...
متن کاملThe fine-structure constant: a new observational limit on its cosmological variation and some theoretical consequences
Endeavours of the unification of the four fundamental interactions have resulted in a development of theories having cosmological solutions in which low-energy limits of fundamental physical constants vary with time. The validity of such theoretical models should be checked by comparison of the theoretical predictions with observational and experimental bounds on possible time-dependences of th...
